Alphonse Mucha's relationship with the town of Kysperk (called Letohrad since 1950) is not entirely clear. Some sources say his wife had relatives there whom they would visit yearly; other sources say he vacationed there and still others that he worked there in the early to mid-1930s, using a school as his summer studio. While in Kysperk, in the years following his completion of the Slav Epic, he worked on several prominent commissions, painting large works for municipal buildings and societies. Here, Mucha presents a completed sketch "to little George [Jirik] in memory of his 14th birthday in Kysperk 27/VIII 33 [August 27, 1933]." The image depicts a young Slavic girl in the ethnic style that Mucha adopted in the later part of his career.
